Nuclear Status Update: Exelon shuts Quad Cities 2, powers other plants down for maintenance

Exelon Corp. unit Exelon Generation Co. LLC shut Quad Cities 2 early March 15 for refueling and maintenance, an Exelon spokeswoman told SNL Energy. The unit was last shut for refueling between March 3, 2008, and March 29, 2008, according to SNL data. Quad Cities 1 is operating at full power, according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Quad Cities 1 has an operating capacity of 905 MW, while Quad Cities 2 has an operating capacity of 867 MW. Both units entered service in December 1972. The plant, in Rock Island County, Ill., is owned by Exelon Generation, with a 75% stake, and MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. subsidiary MidAmerican Energy Co., with a 25% share.

Exelon Generation reduced power at Peach Bottom 2 to 82% over the weekend for control rod system maintenance and returned the unit to full power by March 15, according to an Exelon spokeswoman. Peach Bottom 3 is at full power, according to the NRC. Located in York County, Pa., Peach Bottom 2 and 3 each have an operating capacity of 1,138 MW. Peach Bottom 2 was brought in service in July 1974, and Peach Bottom 3 was brought in service in December 1974. Exelon Generation and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. unit PSEG Nuclear LLC each own a 50% share of the plant.

Exelon Generation reduced power at Dresden 3 to 74% by March 13 for scheduled maintenance and returned the unit to full power by March 14, according to Exelon. Dresden 2 is also at full power, the NRC reported. Located in Grundy County, Ill., Dresden units 2 and 3 have a current operating capacity of 867 MW each and entered service in August 1970 and October 1971, respectively.

Duke Energy Corp. unit Duke Energy Carolinas LLC shut McGuire 1 March 13 for refueling and maintenance, a Duke spokeswoman told SNL Energy on March 15. The unit was last shut for refueling between Sept. 20, 2008, and Oct. 31, 2008, according to SNL data. McGuire 2 is operating at full power, according to the NRC. McGuire units 1 and 2 have an operating capacity of 1,157 MW each. Unit 1 entered service in September 1981 and unit 2 entered service in March 1984. The plant is in Mecklenburg County, N.C.

The Tennessee Valley Authority returned Browns Ferry 2 to full capacity by March 14, then reduced power to 85% by March 15, the NRC reported. The unit was taken offline last week to make repairs to a transformer that provides power to onsite equipment. Browns Ferry 1 is at full power and Browns Ferry 3 is shut for refueling and maintenance. The plant is in Limestone County, Ala. The 1,100-MW unit 1 entered service in August 1974, followed by the 1,135.2-MW unit 2 in March 1975 and the 1,134.2-MW unit 3 in March 1977.

Grand Gulf reached 51% power by March 15, up from 10% reactor power on March 12, the NRC said. The plant, in Claiborne County, Miss., is owned by Entergy Corp. unit System Energy Resources Inc., with a 90% share, and South Mississippi Electric Power Association, with a 10% share. The plant entered commercial operation in July 1985.

Nebraska Public Power District reduced power at its 800-MW Cooper plant on March 13 to clean electrical leads on the plant's condensate booster pump, an NPPD spokesman told SNL Energy. The unit was returned to full power on March 14, he said. The Cooper plant, in Nemaha County, Neb., entered commercial operation in March 1974.
