US DOE Looking To Extend The Life Of The 104 Nuclear Power Plants
The US is one the most polluted countries in the world as it reaches 6 to 7 tons of carbon per person. At the moment there are no more and no less than 104 nuclear power plants that generate about 20 percent of the total electricity in the US, however, the problem is that they also generate about 70% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. These nuclear power plants have a license to work of about 40 years and their function limit is reaching an end as of 2012.
Nuclear energy technology has evolved and now we can provide carbon free electricity and the US Department of Energy says that this is the perfect time to “address climate change.” The problem with nuclear power is that some countries in the world are looking to build nuclear weapons therefore those 104 nuclear power plants come with a great responsibility. This sounds a lot like SpiderMan, but the Obama administration has approved billions of dollars in loan guarantees for nuclear power.
The US DOE is looking to “obtain” more money from the Obama administration in order to research new technologies that will extend the lifespan on a nuclear power plant to more than eighty years. Most people are against nuclear power plants, but if they provide carbon free electricity then I don’t see any problems that this technology will cause to the environment.
“At the moment there are no more and no less than 104 nuclear power plants that generate about 20 percent of the total electricity in the US, however, the problem is that they also generate about 70% of the total greenhouse gas emissions.” Think there is a big mistake here, nuclear power grerates almost zero greenhouse gas emissions.
