BYRON, Ill. -- Federal regulators are inspecting a nuclear power station in northern Illinois operated by a unit of Exelon Corp. after a pipe leak was found last week.

NRC STAFF APPROVES TRANSFER OF POINT BEACH OPERATING LICENSE

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has approved the transfer of the operating license for the Point Beach Nuclear Plant from owner Wisconsin Electric Power Company and operator Nuclear Management Company, to new owner FPL Energy Point Beach, LLC. As provided by NRC regulations, the staff's approval of the transfer is effective July 31, contingent on the licensee receiving certain regulatory and judicial approvals.

NRC AUTHORIZES RESTART OF BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II office in Atlanta notified Tennessee Valley Authority officials today that the agency is authorizing the restart of Unit 1 at the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant in Alabama.

“TVA has completed an extensive refurbishment of Unit 1 and the NRC staff has closely monitored their progress throughout the project,” Region II Deputy Regional Administrator for Operations Victor McCree said.

 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) today unveiled the third in a series of major steps to enhance the post-Sept. 11 security of nuclear power plants. The agency proposal would require each applicant for a new reactor design to assess how the design, to the extent practicable, can have greater built-in protections to avoid or mitigate the effects of a large commercial aircraft impact, making them even more resistant to an attack.

By a 5-0 vote, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission today authorized the NRC’s Office of New Reactors to issue an Early Site Permit (ESP) to System Energy Resources Inc. for the Grand Gulf ESP site near Port Gibson, Miss. The staff has 10 business days to carry out the Commission’s directions and issue the permit, the second ESP the NRC has approved.
